Is KFC Halal in Australia? 15 Stores, Two Different Answers

KFC publishes the answer to this one itself, store by store. It is more detailed than most people expect, and it splits into two groups that are not the same thing at all.

The short version: KFC Australia names 15 halal certified restaurants. Six are in Melbourne. Five of the 15 do not serve bacon at all. The other ten are certified and still sell bacon, with segregation procedures in place. Which group your local sits in is the part worth knowing before you order.

The Melbourne stores

Certified, and no bacon on site

Campbellfield. It is the only Victorian store in this group.

The others are all in Sydney: Punchbowl, Bankstown South, Auburn and Lakemba.

Certified, and bacon is still sold

Fawkner, Cranbourne North, Dandenong, Dandenong Market and Springvale.

KFC says these stores "operate with strict bacon handling and segregation procedures in place". The rest of that group sits outside Victoria: Leppington Central and Milperra in NSW, and Canberra City, Nicholls and Wright in the ACT.

What the certification actually covers

Two lines from KFC do most of the work here.

The Chicken supplied to these Certified Restaurants is Halal.

All certified restaurants will have their Halal Certificate on display listing Halal suitable menu items.

Read that second one twice. The certificate lists which menu items are halal suitable, which is not the same as saying the whole menu is. At a certified store you are meant to check the certificate and order from what is on it, rather than assume everything behind the counter qualifies.

KFC does not name the body doing the certifying. Neither does Hungry Jack's, Nando's or GYG, so that is the norm across the big chains rather than anything unusual to KFC.

The bit the "halal KFC" lists leave out

Most third party pages flatten all 15 stores into one list and call it done. That is the mistake worth avoiding.

For a lot of people, a certified store where bacon is cooked in the same kitchen is simply a different decision from a store with no pork on the premises at all. For others, the certificate settles it. Both positions are reasonable, and it is not our place to pick one for you.

What we can do is tell you which store is which, so you are choosing rather than guessing.

What changed since 2019

The wording KFC used to publish said it had "just a few" halal restaurants and no plans to expand. That line still circulates on pages quoting it as current. It is now 15 stores, in two tiers, listed by suburb.

KFC words both lists as locations that "include" these stores, and says any changes will be communicated on the same page. So treat it as the company's current position rather than a permanent list, and check again before you drive across town for it.

Before you order

Look for the halal certificate on display. Every certified store has one, and KFC tells customers to refer to it.

Order from the items named on the certificate, not the whole menu board.

If you are at a KFC that is not on the list above, treat it as not certified. There is no chain-wide halal supply in Australia.

If bacon on the premises matters to you, only Campbellfield clears that bar in Victoria.

And the rest of Melbourne

Six certified stores across a city this size is not much of a fried chicken scene. The good news is that Melbourne has a lot of halal fried chicken that needs no asterisks, no phone call and no certificate hunt at the counter, from Korean double fried to Middle Eastern charcoal to the shopfronts that have been quietly doing it for twenty years.
