Ramadan in Melbourne: Where to Break Your Fast

Planning iftar in Melbourne? Venues with function rooms and group capacity, plus what to sort out before Ramadan starts.

Ramadan changes how you eat out. Tables get bigger, timing gets tighter, and the places that handle it well book out early.

Here's how to plan it in Melbourne.

Book earlier than you think

Iftar sittings fill weeks ahead, particularly on weekends and in the last ten nights. If you're organising anything for more than six people, start ringing venues before Ramadan begins, not in the first week.

The venues that take large groups tend to be the ones with function rooms, which is what the list below is built from.

Venues with function room capacity

These have function rooms recorded in our directory, which makes them a sensible starting point for a group booking.

Ziyka Restaurant, Carlton. 4.6 stars from over 13,000 reviews, which is the largest review count in our entire directory. Pakistani and Indian, casual dining and BBQ, alcohol free.

Mint & Co., Carlton. 4.7 from nearly 9,000 reviews. Middle Eastern, licensed.

Salang, Dandenong. 4.7 from around 1,000 reviews. Afghan, alcohol free, and one of the better options in the southeast.

Deja Wu Authentic Cuisine. 4.7 from nearly 600 reviews. Turkish and Middle Eastern, alcohol free, and already set up for breakfast service which makes it worth asking about suhoor.

ONDA Bar & Eatery, Richmond. 4.7 from over 1,600 reviews. Latin American, licensed.

Stella Restaurant & Bar. 4.7 from over 1,800 reviews. Italian fine dining, licensed, for when iftar is also a celebration.

Important: having a function room isn't the same as running an iftar sitting. Ring and ask. Iftar service isn't something we hold in our data, and it changes year to year.

If you're cooking at home

Most iftars happen around a family table, not a restaurant one. Sort your meat early, because halal butchers get genuinely busy in the week before Ramadan and in the lead-up to Eid.

Browse halal butchers across Melbourne in our directory.

Timing

Maghrib in Melbourne shifts by several minutes across the month, so check a current local timetable rather than relying on last year's. Your local mosque will publish one.

Good to know: if you're booking a restaurant for iftar, tell them it's iftar when you book. The good ones will have food on the table at the right minute instead of taking your order at sunset.

How we check. Halal Food Melbourne is a directory, not a certifying body. Where a venue carries a badge, we've seen evidence: a current certificate from a recognised Australian certifier, or their supplier's. A venue without a badge hasn't been through our checks yet, which doesn't mean it isn't halal. If halal status matters to you, always confirm with the venue.
