Is GYG Halal? What Guzman y Gomez Actually Says

It's one of the most searched halal questions in Australia, and the honest answer has more than one part.

The short version: GYG's chicken is halal certified in every Australian store, but the Guerrero marinade and the kitchen itself are not, and the company says it takes no extra steps to prevent cross-contamination. Whether that works for you depends on where you draw your line.

What GYG actually says

This isn't secondhand. It's on Guzman y Gomez's own help centre, in an article titled "Is GYG Halal?":

We do have halal certified chicken across all our locations, Australia-wide, however our Guerrero marinade and restaurant processes are not certified halal. We do not take additional measures to prevent cross-contamination of halal with non-halal ingredients.

That wording has been stable since May 2025 and was still live when we checked on 1 August 2026.

What that means in practice

Three things worth understanding.

The certification is on the ingredient, not the restaurant. The chicken arriving at the store is certified. The kitchen it's cooked in is not. That's a meaningful difference, and GYG is refreshingly clear about it rather than blurring the two.

Pork is on the premises. GYG's own breakfast menu lists streaky bacon. Same kitchen, same surfaces, same tongs unless someone makes a point of it.

Only the chicken is claimed. GYG makes no halal claim about its beef or any other protein. If you're ordering, the chicken is the only item the company itself stands behind.

No certifier is named

Here's the gap. GYG doesn't publish which body certifies its chicken, or a certificate number, anywhere on its own website. You'll find blogs naming a supplier, but we couldn't verify any of it against a primary source, so we won't repeat it.

If certifier identity matters to you, and for a lot of people it does, that's a question worth putting to GYG directly.

So can you eat there?

That's genuinely your call, and it depends on your threshold.

If you accept certified meat cooked in a mixed kitchen, GYG's chicken is a reasonable option and one of the few national chains willing to state its position plainly. If you need certified premises with no pork on site and separated preparation, GYG doesn't meet that bar and doesn't claim to.

Good to know: this is a national position, not a Melbourne one. We found no Victoria-specific statement, so what applies in Broadmeadows applies in Brisbane.
